‘Lay of the Land’
Last week, I delivered copies of our autumn magazine to a fascinating exhibition in King’s Lynn, celebrating what makes the East Anglian landscape so distinctive. So of course, I had a good look round…
Curated by Paul Vater and Paul Barratt of @contemporaryandcountry, ‘Lay of the Land: East Anglian Landscape Now’ features recent work by 34 artists and makers, displayed across the Fermoy Gallery and Shakespeare Barn at the historic St George’s Guildhall. Expect to see a rich and varied collection of paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, shell work and glass, which come together in reflecting why our region’s landscape continues to inspire creative minds.
The artists’ connections to the landscape are fascinating. Victoria Fenn’s sculpture, for instance, reflects her deep connection to farming, rooted in her upbringing on a fenland farm; Linda Jamieson’s paintings are inspired by the North Norfolk coast, and explore the dynamic forces of nature. Simon Carter, meanwhile, has spent most of his life on the Essex coast, and says: ‘I paint based on walking and drawing on the Essex marshes, returning to the same spots, seeking the unexpected in familiar landscapes.’
The exhibition continues until 26 October, open Wednesdays to Saturdays. Free entry. In the picture… This issue’s front cover artist, Victoria Ford, talks local wildlife, being inspired by the seasons and the sound of skylarks I’ve been working as a lino print artist for about two years now, but I’ve enjoyed creating art since I could hold a pen. I’ve lived in Norfolk nearly all my life, apart from a couple of early years away in Germany as my dad was in the RAF. I love the simplicity of black and white just like the wood engravings in old nature books, which really inspired my style. While the main focus of my work is the bird or animal, the surrounding landscape drives my work and quite often, it is the landscape I see first. Living in rural Norfolk I have a lot to choose from! I’m a big fan of birdwatching and watching wildlife in general. I’m lucky I get a large mix of wildlife in my garden, too, which I like to try and capture on trail cameras. Many of these local characters are featured in my work. My work is definitely influenced by the seasons. Autumn is particularly great for art, with all the nuts, mushrooms and the changing leaves plus, as we know in Norfolk, all the wonderful migratory birds visiting. My favourite season is summer, especially those hot, breezy days walking through a field of swaying wheat listening to skylarks as they climb higher into the air - my favourite bird; when I hear it, I think of summer. The NNL front cover image started as a view through an oak tree that caught my eye. I photograph images like this regularly when I see them, so if you see me photographing random branches or crouching low to get the scene from the animal’s point of view you know what I’m up to. As for the barn owl, they regularly hunt this area and I knew he’d sit perfectly in the oak. 2024 is our 20th anniversary year so it’s definitely time for a shout out to our wonderful distributors, Jim and Janet, who’ve been with us for 20 years this autumn!
It’s been a busy week for Jim and Janet with early starts, delivering copies of our autumn issue across the area, but they take it in their stride - even the rain - after all, they’ve delivered bulk copies of all our issues of NNL over the last 20 years, except issue one.
I always love seeing their coffee stops (they are experts, and Jim is partial to carrot cake) and this time, they delivered magazines and had a pitstop at The Maltings in Weybourne, which reopened in August under the ownership of The Chestnut Group, who’ve given it a stunning refurb.
Jim and Janet’s verdict? ‘Wow what a beautiful venue. It really is worth a visit - it has a lovely home from home atmosphere. They will make you feel very welcome too - the staff were so obliging helping us set up a photo in the library with pastries and coffee.’
