A quiet wander round the walled garden at Holkham yesterday before it opened for the day, after getting set up for day two of the North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival, which the estate hosted there at the weekend. It was a joy to watch the butterflies fluttering around (I love the collective noun ‘a kaleidoscope of butterflies’), to see the late summer blooms and indeed, a few signs of the season to come. Thanks for a great weekend @northnorfolkfoodanddrinkfest on the @norfolk_restaurantweek @norfolkhideaways stand - looking forward to next year’s festival! The walled garden is open daily until 3 November. Get set for a fantastic foodie weekend! The North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival returns to Holkham’s Walled Garden this Saturday and Sunday (31 August and 1 September) from 10am to 4pm each day. From chutney to cheeses, gin to juices, artisan beer, bakes, veg and much more, shop stands from more than 50 local producers, be inspired by demos in the cookery theatre, refuel at the food concessions and explore the glorious walled garden. There are activities for children and dogs on leads are welcome. We’ll be on the Norfolk Restaurant Week stand with its crew and its 2024 headline sponsor, Norfolk Hideaways - come and say hello! I really enjoy revisiting gardens through the seas

I really enjoy revisiting gardens through the seasons and loved seeing Houghton Hall’s Walled Garden in all its late summer glory yesterday. To name just a few highlights - the dahlias were a delight; the Mediterranean Garden transported us to sunnier climes; the fruit and vegetable gardens, with their extensive colourful companion planting, were full of summer’s bounty; the white roses were stunning, with an Antony Gormley sculpture towering above. The little details are lovely, too, including the blackboard at the plant shop with facts about the garden and little vases of flowers which are in bloom now. ▪️Antony Gormley: Time Horizon, an installation of 100 life-size sculptures across the park at Houghton, continues until 31 October. ▪️The showcase of ceramics by Dame Magdalene Odundo within the hall runs until 29 September. ▪️Houghton is open on selected days until 31 October. @houghton_walled_garden @houghton_hall #houghtonhall #walledgarden #latesummer #art #antonygormley #sculpture #dahlias #norfolk #garden #westnorfolk #historichouse

🎨 Cover story We asked our high summer issue’s cover artist - Samuel Thomas - to share five Norfolk places he’s been inspired by, in pictures! First, we have a sunset vision of Cromer titled ‘Silky Wet Sands’. Cromer is my hometown, I lived there until I was 30. I have many nostalgic memories of this place with friends and family, but also in my quest to become an artist. I always find it stress relieving to walk the shoreline and catch a sunset over the wet sands. It’s an incredible scene. Next, Norwich Market. What I love about Norwich (where I now live) is how the market place brings together such a diverse group of people in a small area. There’s a thriving, bustling atmosphere and everyone always seems friendly. Norwich is a very beautiful city, full of historic charm and character. Thirdly, Felbrigg Woods, with its ‘Victory V’ tree-lined avenue. The entire @felbrigghallnt Estate is very atmospheric, with cattle grazing, a remote church, a hidden lake area. The woods themselves for me are beautiful and again walking in woodland is a calming, grounding, yet uplifting experience - something I try to capture in my woodland paintings. Sheringham Park and the viewpoint captured in ‘Train Through Weybourne’. @sheringhamparknt is a great place to escape the crowds and to get some exercise. There is a tall viewing tower platform from which you can see the iconic steam train journey through the landscape. I use my artistic licence to rearrange things on the canvas, but it’s the atmosphere and the wonder of a moment which I aim to capture. I like the timeless nostalgia of such a view. Lastly, Holkham Beach, as shown in this artwork of the Wells beach huts, looking towards Holkham. I love nature, so having the pinewoods of @holkhamestate alongside the sand dunes and the beach means you get three diverse landscapes in one area. The beach hut area draws the crowds but away from here you can feel as if you have the whole beach to yourself as it’s such a wide-open expanse. @gardenhousecromer is hosting an exhibition of Samuel’s work from 10 to 26 August. Delighted to say that our high summer issue of North Norfolk Living is out now. It’s our bumper 20th anniversary edition of the magazine and we’re thrilled to be able to share even more of what’s on, where to go and stories from this wonderful part of the world. Our publisher fell in love with North Norfolk whilst walking the Norfolk Coast Path a little over 20 years ago and so this magazine was born. But what has brought us to where we are today are the people who have worked on and supported NNL over the years - so a massive thank you to our publisher, the editors, all the writers, designers, photographers, the advertising team and distributors, our advertisers and of course, our readers. On a personal note, it is a privilege to edit this magazine, and although I was brought up here, I always learn some new ‘somethings’ about the area each issue, which is as it should be! ~ Amanda
