🦒Get set, Go-Go! 🐘🦏🦁🦍

🦒Have you spotted a brightly coloured elephant in Norwich, or maybe a giraffe adorned with animals and birds at Holkham? 🦁Your eyes haven’t deceived you - it’s time to go on safari in Norfolk and follow the roar-ingly good GoGoSafari art trail, comprising more than 50 magnificent animal sculptures thoughtfully decorated by local and national artists 🎨

🦒The event is raising funds for local charity Break, which supports children and young people in, around and leaving care. There are rhinos, lions, giraffes, gorillas and elephants, each animal representing a different aspect of Break’s work.

🦁Much of the action is in Norwich (there are more than 60 mini giraffes to find too), but there’s a herd of five splendid sculptures on our patch - ‘The County Five’. 🐘We won’t give all the fun away but it’s designed as a day trip, taking you to Reepham and Whitwell Station, Reepham (with Prince the lion by artist Mik Richardson, channelling Purple Rain), Jarrolds Letheringsett, Holkham Hall (we love Woody the Giraffe, decorated by Jina Gelder to celebrate British wildlife) and Sunny Honey the gorilla in Hunstanton by Hilary Sanderson, posing midframe of sunsets over the sea.

A sea of roses, glorious long borders in full bloom, quiet corners in the Mediterranean garden and the last of the wisteria hysteria; foxgloves and lupins standing to attention; irises and perfect peonies; miles of clipped hedging; antique sculptures and a flaming fountain - the five-acre walled garden at Houghton was at its early summer best when I visited last week… and before you know it, it will be dahlia season! 🌺Open until 28 September, select days. 🍴Lunch with quite a view! After visiting the gardens at Wiveton Hall a while ago, a friend and I had lunch at the recently re-opened Wiveton Hall Cafe, now run by Norfolk Tea Co. We made a beeline for an outside table but had a good nose at the new-look interiors, and gift shop selling Norfolk produce. As you’d expect, they have a fantastic range of teas to drink in, or purchase. Ensconced at a table with a prime view across to the coast, my friend ordered chicken Caesar salad and I had a tuna and cheddar panini as the quiche had just sold out (we were late lunchers). Both were delicious and we rounded off a long, chatty lunch with coffee. With hindsight, I think we should have made the effort to try some homemade cake, though we did do a detour to buy some @sharringtonstrawberries on the way home! 🫖Cafe crib sheet☕️ 🗓️Open daily, 10am to 5pm
🍴Menus currently include all-day breakfast brioches, light lunches - think salads, sandwiches, and more, plus homemade cakes and scones

Wolterton is throwing open its doors to the public

Wolterton is throwing open its doors to the public again tomorrow (Wednesday 11 June), offering a level of access unseen since the 1970s, and yesterday, @girlaroundnorthnorfolk and I were invited to the press preview. This stunning 18th-century Palladian hall sits in 500-acres of parkland and was built in 1741 by Horatio Walpole, housing his considerable art collection. Now owned by the Ellis family, this historic house is fittingly being reopened with an extensive arts and culture programme, complete with ‘Sea State’ an exhibition of work by contemporary artists Maggi Hambling and Ro Robertson (11 June to 7 December), and artist residencies. You can also visit to enjoy the @bread_source cafe in the library or one of the walks round the extensive grounds with its 10-acre lake. Dogs on leads are welcome in select parts of the grounds. Entry is free for the above experiences (though you are invited to consider making a donation to The Ted Ellis Trust). You do need to pre-book though. Open Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 4pm, until 7 December. Alongside, there’s also a programme of creative workshops, from flower arranging to painting; opera and theatre on the lawn; dining experiences - and you can book a stay, too (visit the website for prices for these activities). Wait for it… I was thrilled to spot this poppy field with a public footpath running alongside it when coming into Ringstead on Tuesday evening. There are some truly amazing fields of poppies around at the moment and several others near this one. It was especially magical to walk right alongside it - thank you to Courtyard Farm for this wonderful experience. PS It’s Ringstead Open Gardens this Sunday 8 June ’25, so why not combine the two floral experiences (and if you want to make a weekend of it, it’s Stanhoe Open Gardens on Saturday!) @stanhoegardens

📍Last week I visited the gardens at Wiveton Hall for the first time and am already thinking about when I can go back! 🌿Situated right on the coast, the gardens blend natural, wild planting with more formal elements like topiary, and ‘borrow’ the stunning views across the marshes to the sea most effectively. 🌺I won’t give too much away but highlights for me included the combination of formal topiary hedging around a wild meadow; the scent of wild garlic; the abundant frothy cow parsley; artfully place blue benches; the wisteria on the hall; the magnificent walled working kitchen garden complete with a peony hedge and brick paths. 🌿The gardens are open daily until October for self-guided tours, which I did, tickets £5 and bookable online at www.wivetonhall.co.uk (booking fee applies) or pay at the cafe. 🌿UPDATE: Desmond’s tours are now sold out for the season 🌿
Owner Desmond MacCarthy runs guided tours on select dates, too (28 May [tomorrow, tickets available according to the website at the time of posting], 18 June, 23 July and 27 August, at 11am; £20pp, again book via the website, booking fee applies). @wivetonhall
