Cocktail hour
20th September 2026
Suffield Arms Margarita
From a classic Manhattan to a driver friendly mocktail, Sarah Hardy shares a few suggestions on where to find your own personal favourites
The Gangway, Sheringham
Beericano is their spin on the classic highball, the Americano (Campari, sweet red Vermouth and soda water), but this one is stirred over ice with a dash of apricot liqueur and topped with a beer foam! Wow – interesting. The Gangway, near the train station, is a key part of Sheringham’s increasing profile as a food and drink hotspot – there’s definitely a buzz to the place. Cocktails are served alongside coffees and craft beers.

M’s, Aylsham
This cocktail bar is a friendly place, run by Emma Payne, and was one of the first to open on the Strip in this market town – also known as Red Lion Street. Emma’s cocktail list is impressive with everything from a classic mai tai to a good selection of mocktails. M’s Boozy Cherry Cola is Emma’s personal favourite and, as it blends cherry brandy, amaretto, spiced rum and Coca-Cola, will appeal to those with a sweet tooth. Tuck into some tapas while you’re there, too, or a sharing board – the seafood one is recommended.

The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe
The signature cocktail here is a Bloody Mary and it’s quite a drink, for sure! With 58 and Co Vodka plus tomato juice, lemon and the hotel’s own spice and an oyster, it’s practically a meal in itself. Sip it gently on the first-floor terrace, with views out over the marshes for a special very North Norfolk experience.

Wells Crab House, Wells-next-the-Sea
Although primarily a well-respected restaurant – with an accent on fish – co-owner Kelly Dougal loves cocktails, so she has had a lot of fun developing a very extensive range, many using locally produced spirits. The Hedgerow is a good example as it uses gins from Black Shuck, Whin Hill and Archangel – with apple juice and elderflower cordial, too. It’s refreshing, with mint, apple and rhubarb as garnishes, but be warned – it packs a punch!

The Suffield Arms, near Thorpe Market
The first-floor bar, The Saloon, at The Suffield Arms is a wonderfully atmospheric place – you feel like you’re in a movie from the 1960s, with Michael Caine or Sean Connery about to walk in! The cocktail list is hard to beat, with old favourites mingling with newer more exotic ones. There is always a seasonal margarita on the menu and the hibiscus one offers you Rooster Rojo Blanco Tequila, hibiscus, lime, lemon, cinnamon and bitters for a zingy kick start to your evening.
Chambers Cocktail Company, Norwich
Nestled in the shadow of Norwich Cathedral, this is a stylish spot for a cocktail or two if you are in the Fine City. You can pick a beverage from an A-Z list, design your own tipple or simply opt for a classic one! Kiwi Be Friends is a favourite – kiwi rum, cachaça, honey, kiwi, oolong tea syrup and lime.
