HOLKHAM HALL BY CANDLELIGHT

29 November – 30 December

Holkham’s annual candlelight tour transforms the Palladian hall into an immersive wonderland, when each State Room takes on its own persona inspired by nature, fairytales and celebration. This year, expect a secret winter garden, an underwater kingdom, a circus spectacular and, for the first time ever, a boogie. A new collaboration with Dr Peter Lovatt, aka Doctor Dance, will see visitors finish their visit in disco style in the Old Kitchen, where they’ll be encouraged to learn a dance and embrace the seasonal cheer. Guests visiting before Christmas will enjoy a complimentary glass of fizz and a mince pie, included in the ticket price (except certain dates where refreshments are not included). Visitors can choose between a self-guided experience, allowing them to explore the Hall at their own pace, or a guided tour.

If so, join French chef Loïc Malfait on 1 December (10am to 1pm) for a Christmas Canapé Making Demonstration, where you’ll learn to create delicious savoury bites. On 3 December (10am to 2pm), florist Harriet Aitken will be leading a Christmas Wreath Making Workshop in the Marble Hall, taking you through the process of making your own wreath using fresh flowers and foliage, cones, berries and velvet ribbons. Finish off with a glass of something special and for those who would like to, a private tour of the Hall and gardens.

5 December – 3 January

It’s panto season, oh yes it is, and Princess Theatre in Hunstanton is bringing the fairy godmother of all pantomimes to the stage this Christmas with Cinderella. As the classic rags-to-riches folk tale unfurls (wicked stepsisters, ugly sisters, a dashing prince, a pumpkin-carriage, the ball, midnight, a glass slipper, the royal wedding), expect glittering dance numbers, spectacular special effects, toe-tapping songs and laughs galore. Not forgetting plenty of audience participation – is it even a panto without everyone shouting “behind you”? – and a liberal sprinkling of fairy dust. With a stellar cast – including Italia Conti graduate Lucy Galloway in the titular role – you’ll have a ball.
