Village churches and towns across our area are alive with the sound of music this season. Amanda Loose takes a pew

North Norfolk Chamber Opera – Norfolk’s only amateur opera group – will present a double bill at St Margaret’s Church in Cley on 21, 22 and 23 May at 7pm, pairing Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Handel’s Acis and Galatea. This fully staged and costumed production will be performed ‘in the round’ by a cast who’ve spent eight months rehearsing. www.northnorfolkchamberopera.org.uk

Music in the Burnhams has a busy early summer ahead. First up, The Victoria String Quartet will be at St Mary’s Church, Brancaster on 23 May from 7.30pm, with Tchaikovsky’s Quartet No.1 in D major, Op.11 and Schubert’s Quartet No.15 in G major, D.887 on the agenda. All Saints Church, Burnham Thorpe is the venue on 13 June at 7.30pm, where Turkish violinist Deniz Sensoy – named one of Classic FM’s Rising Stars in 2024 – will be joined by London-based pianist Archie Bonham. 

Back at St Mary’s, Brancaster on 27 June from 7.30pm, mezzo soprano Hannah Just and Norwich-born pianist James Smith will perform a programme including Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.7 and pieces by Chopin, Elgar, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Roger Quilter and Ernest Charles. www.musicintheburnhams.com

The Victoria String Quartet

International jazz singer Tatiana Eva-Marie and the Ben Creighton Griffiths Trio will bring the sounds of 1930s Parisian-style jazz to St Margaret’s Church in Cley on 31 May at 7.30pm. Tatiana has released 12 albums, whilst Cardiff-based harpist Ben has his own following in North Norfolk. Tickets via Eventbrite.

Binham Priory is hosting an impressive series of concerts, including their summer series which kicks off on 18 July with Norwich Baroque. Before then, a cappella choir the Suffolk Singers return to the venue with ‘In Sweet Music’, a programme of sacred and secular pieces, on 24 May from 3pm, from Renaissance works to the music of modern composers. On 27 June at 7pm, Norwich-based chamber choir Viva Voce Singers will present ‘Music When Soft Voices Die’, an evening of a cappella choral music including Benjamin Britten’s AMDG (Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam) and partsongs by Irish composer Charles Wood. Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society will travel to the priory on 11 July for 6pm and ‘Echoes of the Divine’, comprising Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs and Im Abendrot by Strauss. www.binhampriory.org

The Wandering Minstrels will stage ‘The World of Gilbert and Sullivan’ at St Catherine’s Church, Ludham on 6 June at 7.30pm. The group will sing, act and dance their way through exceprts from The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, and more. ChamberMusicBox’s concert in Trunch on 20 June at 7.30pm will be dedicated to Roy Abrams (1929-2019). Expect quintets by Mozart and Brahms, presented in the beautiful surrounds of St Botolph’s Church. https://st-nicks-arts-centre.square.site

Fakenham Choral Society (FCS) will perform Vivaldi’s Gloria and Mozart’s Coronation Mass at its summer concert on 20 June at Fakenham Parish Church from 7.30pm. FCS Chair, Rosemary Dear says: ‘This will be a concert of choral works which are well-loved by both singers and audience and very much in the tradition of music that FCS has performed over the years. It is therefore a fitting concert for Mark Jones’ final concert as our music director.’ www.fakenhamchoralsociety.org

Norfolk Symphony Orchestra will conclude its 50th anniversary season with an afternoon of rousing music at King’s Lynn Corn Exchange on 5 July from 3.30pm. Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, Cornish Dances by Malcolm Arnold – who spent the latter part of his life in Norfolk – and Sibelius’ Karelia Suite are part of a programme which, appropriately, will culminate with Walton’s triumphant and joyous Crown Imperial. www.nso-uk.co.uk

And as we move into high summer, Celestial Voices, led by music director Janet Kelsey, will perform at St Mary & All Saints Church, Little Walsingham on 11 July at 6pm. The 35-strong choir of choristers mainly from Norfolk will sing music dating from the late 1500s to the present day, including pieces by Bach, Handel, Howells and Ravel.
