From interiors collections to brunch boxes, candles to a new opticians and hearing care practice in Holt, Amanda Loose gets the lowdown on the some of North Norfolk’s lockdown launches
North Norfolk skipper, Zoe Dunford, has spliced her love of sailing and interiors, with the launch of her new venture, wallpaper and fabrics business, Collingwood Coastal.
A skipper for Wells-based Coastal Exploration Company and Neil Thompson Boats, Zoe got creative during the first national lockdown. Her first wallpaper design (pictured) has already set sail to customers in New South Wales and Rhode Island and she is now taking pre-orders for a range of cushions including in a newly-released beach hut print.
“While missing the sea and boats during the first lockdown, I started sketching some of the things I love about the coast to help transport me back onto the water, at least in spirit,” she says.
“I also did lots of repair and maintenance for my holiday let business in Wells-next-the-Sea, and couldn’t find any nautical wallpaper I liked. Over the last few months, I’ve put these two things together and have been delighted by the enthusiasm and support for the first wallpaper design.
“All the boats featured are ones that I know intimately because I’ve sailed them myself. One of them was our first family boat, the 17-foot Seahawk, and now I’m lucky enough to sail others’ boats on charters to explore the North Norfolk coastline and salt marsh, one of the UK’s last great wildernesses.
“The boats in the design look a bit like blueprints, but with some of the character that makes them a joy to sail, such as the curve in the lug rig sail. Similarly, my new beach hut design depicts the huts a bit like architectural drawings, but with some of the character bestowed upon them by the elements, such as sand piled against the door.”
Aptly, the company’s name is inspired by a family connection to Admiral Lord Collingwood, who took over command of the British fleet when Nelson, (who was born and learnt to sail in North Norfolk), was fatally wounded during the Battle of Trafalgar.

A candle-making kit received as a gift inspired North Norfolk based Daisy Stewart to launch Burntsie Candles in February, a range of pretty soy wax scented candles and wax melts.
“I started my business because I have always wanted to do something crafty!” says Daisy. “I have sewn, painted, made with clay, you name it, but nothing was good enough to sell to others! I got a candle making kit as a gift, and Burntsie Candles took off from there. I’ve always thought about doing things my way or having my own take on something I use on a regular basis.
“I launched Burntsie from my own home, using resources I found locally, or I already had, making sure I was sustainable enough to make products that aren’t harmful to our planet.”
Daisy releases candles on a monthly basis, with the range including bobble cube and small pillar candles dyed to pretty pastel hues using soy dye, with scents such as Blueberry & Vanilla, Zesty Orange, and Lime, and Basil & Mandarin (I treated myself to the latter, and it’s gorgeous!).
New for April, are soy wax candles in coconut shells and recycled bottles, with fragrances including Luscious Vanilla, Coffee Mocha, and Thai Lime & Mango.

It’s brunch time!
Not only did Sophie Stapleton and William Cormack get engaged during lockdown, they launched a brand-new business, Beautiful Brunches.
“As a family we adore brunch, usually visiting Norfolk’s brunch stops,” says Sophie. “When Covid hit, it meant we could no longer visit places, so we decided to create delicious brunches at home. The idea grew from there and we wanted to share our love of graze-style brunching.”
They now create yummy brunch boxes delivered to your door, which include limited edition and seasonal boxes. Boxes start from £25, with free delivery within a 20-mile radius of Rougham (PE32 2SF). Get in touch via Instagram @beautifulbrunches.
You can also order their hand-dipped and decorated mini doughnuts from www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BeautifulBrunches
A covetable collection
East meets west in local interior designer, Birdie Fortescue’s new spring/ summer collection, Damascene.
Inspired by a visit Birdie made to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul two summers ago, Damascene offers a contemporary take on traditional motifs from designs from the early Ottoman Empire, and features florals, geometrics and embroidery in a beautiful palette of pinks, greens and blues.
The collection, which includes tableware and linens (perfect for summer dining), cushions, and Suzani throws, as well as rattan furniture, was photographed at Sennowe Park in North Norfolk, and is available from Birdie’s Fakenham Showroom, and online at www.birdiefortescue.co.uk
