Today’s mini interview is with Norfolk artist and printmaker, Sue Welfare, who’ll be sharing a snapshot of her life during the pandemic
Reading:
Back-to-back books (though mostly listened to on Audible while working) including off-piste recommendations by friends, that included the life of Genghis Khan, which was fascinating, although the stand-out reads for me have been Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce, The Hoarder by Jess Kidd, and the Max Wolfe series by Tony Parsons. Over Christmas I’ll be back to old favourites, My Cousin Rachel and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, which I re-read every Christmas.
Watching:
Designated Survivor on Netflix along with lots and lots of crime drama - oh and I finally managed to watch The Fall, which was brilliant.
Listening to:
Lots of comfort listening - Passenger, ‘All the Little Lights’, Bonnie Raitt, The Cranberries, Dido, Annie Lennox, Adele - nothing very highbrow although more than once I’ve turned to Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, which always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Discovering:
I’ve been experimenting with cyanotypes - a form of early camera-less photography and originally used to make blueprints. The colour is beautiful and the process very addictive. And I’ve been making pop-up cards which I’m going to inflict on my nearest and dearest this Christmas!
Destressing by
Walking with our dogs and gardening - even in winter an hour spent outside, even if it is just clearing up leaves, soothes, smooths and calms me in a way nothing else does.
Christmas:
Like a lot of other people we usually spent Christmas and the days before and after catching up with friends and family. This year we’re planning a couple of socially distanced beach walks, a lot of Zoom and Skype, and a quiet Christmas Day with very close family. It’s going to be different, but in some ways more intimate and less stressful. I’m looking forward to the future - and not just future Christmases - but days when we can be with the people we love and care about, and have a hug. It’s weird, isn’t it, those simple things we take for granted? I really miss hugging people!📷 Christmas 2019 @sue.welfare_artist

Working
fEAST Theatre are about to start rehearsals for Merrily on High, a specially commissioned trio of monologues for Christmas by @wells_maltings. Due to COVID our 10th anniversary tour of four plays and 50 shows have all been postponed to next year. We’re so excited to producing something to round off this incredibly challenging year.
Reading
I usually have a couple of books on the go, which is probably why it takes forever to finish them! I’ve started Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver - gripping. I’m really enjoying discovering more about the philosophy behind yoga by dipping into Embodying the Yoga Sutra by Ranju Roy and David Charlton.
Watching
…hardly anything at the moment as I’m trying to memorise a 20-minute monologue… yikes… but managing to squeeze in Strictly and Professional MasterChef with my loved ones. Confession… recently took on The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit. Netflix.
Listening to
Bingeing on Desert Island Discs on BBC Sounds and The Movement for Modern life podcast series ‘Yoga off the Mat’ and ‘Champions of Change’.
Discovering
How to keep moving by adapting exercises and yoga postures that work with an injured shoulder!
Following
All things theatre related! The pandemic has almost crushed the theatre industry. It’s inspiring to see how performers, practitioners, companies, and venues are striving to keep creating and staging work. It is so important to cheer each other on.
Destressing by
Taking bubble baths, yoga, trying to keep to a daily meditation practice plus masses of walking.
Growing
Hopefully planting tulip and daff bulbs for Spring.
