The summer beauty survival guide

2nd August 2021

Harriet Cooper asks the experts for their favourite warm weather beauty tips, from choosing the right SPF to makeup rules for a heatwave

How to avoid frizzy, flyaway hair

By Charley Davies, Barnetts hair salon, Drove Orchards, Thornham

“Hair needs to be kept hydrated and protected from the wind and sun. The drier the hair, the worse the frizz – parched locks soak up the extra humidity in the air, causing the shaft to swell and leading to breaks in the cuticle. Hair then puffs out.

“My tips? Always wear a hat in the sun and use a microfibre towel for drying wet hair to avoid friction. And put the hot tools down. My absolute go-to summer product is Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer (available from the salon, £24), which nourishes hair and reduces frizz.”

Makeup rules for a heatwave

“As warm days and sultry nights approach, our thoughts turn to keeping our makeup fresh and dewy without looking shiny or, dare I say it, sweaty. Working as a makeup artist, especially for weddings, it’s so important to have products which work.

“Use a primer to combat shine. Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Perfecting Primer (£28) will give a great base to any makeup. I also always double set makeup. I use a light dusting of Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder (£32), followed by Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray (£26) to finish off.”

Choosing the right SPF for your skin

By Bec Newstead, founder of The Retreat Spa, Brancaster Hall

“When choosing a sunscreen, it depends on many things – your skin tone, for example, or whether you’re swimming or sweating through physical exercise. Always go for a broad spectrum sunscreen, which protects against UVA and UVB rays.

“Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF 30 Dry Sunscreen (available from the salon, £44) is a weightless, dry SPF for face, body and scalp – and can also be used on little ones who refuse to keep a sun hat on! I also like the Environ RAD Antioxidant Sun Cream SPF15 (available from the salon, £19.95), which assists with fighting free radicals too.”

Go out on a limb

’Tis the season of bare legs, but don’t be daunted. Follow our step-by-step guide to achieving perfect pins

As the temperature rises and hemlines with it, we need our pins to be summer ready – smooth, healthy-looking and tanned. But where to begin the journey to leggy loveliness?

With legs hibernating under trousers and tights for more than half a year, your skin is probably dry and dull, so start by sloughing away dead cells with an exfoliator.

“I recommend a body scrub to buff away winter blues. A smoothing body scrub treatment allows the skin to refresh with an even texture,” Shannon Curry, Congham Hall’s Spa Manager, explains. “Our Macadamia & Papaya Body Scrub (£45 for 45 minutes) is popular at this time of year.” You could also try dry body brushing, which does wonders for cellulite as it boosts lymphatic drainage to eliminate all those nasty toxins.

Of equal importance is moisturising. Whether you use a balm or a butter, lotion or a cream, make sure you do it twice a day to leave legs supple and super hydrated. Norfolk Natural Living in Holt do a lovely Soothing Body Lotion (£17.50), which is rich in minerals, essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

Your skin may be soft-to-the-touch, but if your legs are hirsute then you won’t dare to bare. When it comes to hair removal, whether you choose waxing, shaving, lasering or epilating is totally up to you. Personally, I prefer hot wax – Bellisima Beauty Salon in Holt uses a warm tea tree wax, which is naturally healing and soothing (£25 for a full leg).

The salon is also a great place to get your glow on. Their St Tropez advanced airbrush tanning system promises a natural, golden tan (£20 for legs). Now your limbs are flawless, it’s time to hit the beach.
